April-June 2011
As spring crept up on us we acquired a small caravan to live in on site and we moved out of the cottage. With no potable water, no electricity and no telephone, life was still simple. With no signal for the mobile phone, except by climbing up a hill, communication was also a bit of a challenge. But, the weather began to be amazing. Day after day of sunshine and high blue skies. More new lambs frolicking about everyday, and the cows calving. Spring in the country is a delight. A new barn was proposed and two weeks later there it was - a pole barn, with a clay floor (no cement at all) and framed up on re-used telegraph poles. The road growing and improving everyday and looking quite artistic now. We acquired a yellow van, free, from David "the shop" (he has a new one. I splashed out an purchased a quad bike, great fun and very useful for getting about. The lack of fences has seriously hampered my gardening and tree planting plans. Very frustrating to miss a whole year of gardening due to difficulty of finding a stock fencer here. I suppose the positive aspect of this is that I have had much more time to plan it all, ask what works here and what doesn't and to design a landscape. A fun thing to do, and to have a skilled digger driver like Donald Cameron who enjoys sculpting with earth was amazing. Unfortunately the cows tend to trample and the calves dance on any bare earth. Challenges!
The new house? Well we had the bad news that the kit manufacturing who had the order for our own design house went into liquidation. A set back indeed. But we will rethink and regroup and Maple joiners from Barcaldene on the mainland will take on the job of building the house from scratch to the original but reconfigured plans. Waiting for new warrant from the planning department.
